Okay . . . picture this (really) worst-case scenario: It’s cold and raining, your boyfriend/girlfriend has just dumped you, you’ve just been fired, the pile of unpaid bills is sky-high, your beloved pet has recently died, and you think you’re coming down with a cold. All you want to do (other than hiding under the covers) is to curl up with a good book, something warm and comforting that will make you feel better.
What do you read?
(Any bets on how quickly somebody says the Bible or some other religious text? A good choice, to be sure, but to be honest, I was thinking more along the lines of fiction…. Unless I laid it on a little strong in the string of catastrophes? Maybe I should have just stuck to catching a cold on a rainy day….)
This one is easy. I read Emily Dickinson. She has been through it all, and can see me through all. (Fiction Just Will Not Do!)
The soul has moments of Escape-
When bursting all the doors-
She dances like a Bomb, abroad-
And swings upon the Hours,
As do the Bee - delirious borne-
Long Dungeoned from his rose-
Touch Liberty- then know no more
But Noon, and Paradise -

That's a cool answer. :) Me, I'd go straight for some empty brain-candy.
Very beautiful!! But I'm with Heather. Straight for the brain-candy!! Much easier to lose myself if I don't have to think so hard!
Very nice Melanie! Thanks for popping by mine. :)
Ahh, nice! I find I turn to Daniel Ladinsky's translations of Hafiz when I need a general pick-me-up. There's such energy and joy in those poems. Oh! And Billy Collins is a great one for speaking exactly what I'm thinking (but much more eloquently)...except he's not so great when you're feeling down! :)
I like Mary Oliver and Dorothy Parker too.
I've never been a big poetry fan... I'm simply not that deep (LOL), but I do love Dickenson, and own a huge book of her stuff.
Good choice.
Thanks for visiting earlier :-)
Dickenson's books are good choice. I have read some of her stuff
Great choice of answer, Happy BTT!
Now that's an answer I have not read!
Of course for me, it's H.P. Lovecraft the ultimate in escapism! !
"Adrift on the Black Sea of Infinity."
The best escape for me is to another country. I look for a fat book by an author from Europe, India or South America, preferably a big saga ... the scope makes my concerns shrink and I can be lost in another place for quite a while.
The Secret Garden.
